About

Our Purpose

The Black Student Union exists to serve and unify the students of the Black/African diaspora at the University of California, Santa Barbara, by addressing their needs. BSU seeks to identify relevant issues and initiate appropriate action in order to reduce or eliminate any impediments believed to be adverse to students and their continued well-being and matriculation. BSU aims to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive Black student community, by providing opportunities for all students to increase awareness of Black culture with an emphasis on Black social, political, and intellectual traditions. The BSU will serve its community through educational, cultural, and social programs/activities which relate to the past, present, and future goals, and aspirations of Black people. Furthermore, the BSU works to ensure the continuing development of an academic and social environment that is conducive to Black students in their quest to obtain a quality and meaningful education. The BSU challenges its membership to actively address political, social, and cultural injustices that impact not only the Black community of Santa Barbara, but members of the Diaspora as a whole. While acknowledging and celebrating our people’s greatness, we recognize our responsibility in bettering the condition of the Diaspora as a whole and extending ourselves to the greater community that lacks access to the resources of a UC. We stand for the human rights of all Black people, and all people, at UCSB, and across the globe. In working towards raising the level of Black self and social consciousness within our community, we will enable our people to pursue their Black identity, a sense of Black self-determination, and the right to obtain an adequate education.
